The term "Criminal Justice" is a bit misleading; it does not mean justice for criminals. What it really is a social science that tries to figure out the cause of criminal behavior in order to find a way to control crime and/or stop it completely. In addition, it also looks at how to rehabilitate offenders and various legal processes. It is a multifaceted research which includes legal studies, political science, sociology, psychology, forensic science, public administration, urban studies, and philosophy.
It can be a career filled with excitement, occasional danger, stress, and has the highest level of responsibility asked of the person that chooses it. The criminal justice can be divided into four categories of jobs: police, probation, corrections, and security. There are some questions that you should ask yourself before you proceed, such as if you have any physical limitations especially if you are aiming for police work. How do you react under pressure? Do you consider yourself to be an honest person with integrity? With situations that are difficult to deal with, could you hold yourself accountable and personally responsible? Do you enjoy helping people and are able to show compassion when a crisis is occurring in an individual's life?
If you did not have any difficulty answering these questions, your future in the criminal justice system should be a successful one! At this point, you should start investigating what form of training and what level of education you would like to get. Although a degree is not mandatory for police officers, those that have opted for a higher education will have better advancement possibilities plus a higher income.
Enrolling into an online degree program can begin with an Associate's degree. This degree can take up to two years to complete; however, depending upon the school you choose, it may have an accelerated program or other alternatives in order to help students return to the workforce quicker. The most important aspect of any institutions that you are researching is whether or not they have their accreditation from a recognized national agency. If they try and tell that it is on its way or some other excuse, walk away!
As a criminal justice major, your courses will include the philosophy of punishment, deterrence of crimes, and the ethical codes of behavior. You will also receive instruction regarding the legal and correction system. Upon your graduation, you will be able to obtain employment in law enforcement, court administration, victim services, and corrections.
Of course, you may be aiming for a career in one of the governmental agencies such as the FBI, DEA, U.S. Marshal or Homeland Security. Each of these agencies has its own requirements in order to be considered for employment. The majority are asking their applicants for either an Associate's degree or a Bachelor's degree.
