Pet Friendly Rentals

The majority of people really love their pets, to the point where they become part of the family. Some pet owners cannot bear to be separated from their pets for more than a day or so and for these people, going on holiday can be a problem, because they do not want to leave their friends behind. Obviously the answer is to take your cat or dog with you. Dogs are easier to take away than cats, because they are more well-trained

If you are only going for a couple of days, say on business, finding a hotel near to the place of your meeting should not be too much of a problem, unless you want to stay at one of the big names in the city centre. It is usually the smaller, family-run hotels or guest houses that consent to pets, although some want you to keep your dog in a kennel on the premises overnight. larger hotels are inclined not to be very pet-friendly.

If you propose taking your pet with you, it is better if you make this clear when you make your booking as more hotels do not allow pets than do allow them. Normally there is no extra charge for a pet, but you are responsible for any extra cleaning bills, should your pet get caught short.

If you are going away on vacation or for a longer period of time, it is usually a lot easier to find a holiday rental that will permit you to take your cat or dog with you. Again, it is wisest to make it obvious at booking that you want to take your dog with you. Fortunately, there are about fifty percent of rentals or more that will allow this, although once again, you will be held liable for any damage or mess caused by your dog.

A tip: if on getting there, you see that previous pets have caused some damage or stains, take photographs on your first day and have them dated. Modern cameras often have the facility to date stamp photos or you can use a newspaper. Otherwise, point out the damage to your host.

When you travel with your dog, it is best to put the animal in some sort of a cage especially when driving. A loving dog can be a diversion in a car. If it wants attention just when you are trying to perform a complicated manouevre, it can result in an accident. Some dogs get very frightened in cars and want to sit on their owner's lap, this is also not a good idea and could lead to a charge of dangerous driving. Additionally, if your dog is not caged and you have an accident, it could be hurled through the windshield. If you are travelling by air, then the airline will insist on a cage, but they normally have their own.

Once you arrive at your pet-friendly rental, give your dog some of his regular food to eat, spread out his blanket from home, and put out one of his favourite toys, just to help make him feel at home. After all, everything will be alien to him and he might be able to smell the previous furry tenant. If cleaning staff will be entering your rental during your vacation, make sure that you are there at least for the first few times they call.

Uses for Vinegar in the Hot Tub

Soaking in a hot tub, especially when it's cold outside, bring forth both a relaxing and rejuvenating feeling. Using a regular household product is one unique way to improve the experience further without spending extra money. Try some vinegar to spice up the tub.

Apple cider vinegar isn't just for cooking anymore. Adding a few cups of apple cider vinegar to a hot tub will aid in relieving sore muscles. This hydrotherapeutic method will not harm the hot tub although it will take some time for the filters to effectively remove the vinegar from the water. Remember when soaking to relieve sore muscles or to loosen tight muscles shouldn't be used for the first 24 hours following the injury. An apple cider vinegar soak in a hot tub can help stop itching skin related to allergies or other dermatitis, as well as helping to take the heat out of a sunburn.

In addition to cleaning and relaxing muscles, vinegar can be used to lower the pH level of the water. The normal pH should be somewhere between 7.2 and 7.6. If the pH is too high, meaning the water is too basic, there is an increased risk of developing that nasty looking scaling around the top of the water on the walls of the tub. By adding four cups of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar at a time and then allowing the tub to run through a cycle and circulate the pH can safely and effectively be lowered.

Vinegar is one way to clean the jets. The acidic quality of vinegar eats away at oily residue that has built up in the tub as well as the calcium and other chemical deposits in the jets and tubing. To use vinegar to clean a hot tub, simply pour a one gallon jug of white vinegar into the tub and turn on the jets through one cycle. This will allow the vinegar to penetrate the inner workings of the tub and begin to eat away at all of the buildup. Vinegar can be used as a cleaning agent for hot tubs and is gentle enough that it will not harm any of the working parts or the tub itself.

It is an effective part of hydrotherapy when used in hot tubs and can assist in cleaning out the tub as well as controlling the pH. Vinegar is not just for cooking anymore.

Your Guide To The Best Home Water Filter Systems

A lot of people are getting more and more concerned about the quality of their drinking water. And according to published reports they have very good reason to be concerned. It has been estimated that almost 7 million Americans get sick each year from drinking contaminated tap water. And on top of that, many studies that have been done recently indicate that most bottled water is no better for you than what you may get from your home tap. What that essentially means is that you are paying much more for the same quality of water then.

So water filtration systems have become very popular with many homeowners as a means of improving their home. There are several kinds of filtration systems in use today, and we will try to help you get familiar with the most important ones.

1. The cheapest to purchase, easiest to use, and most portable are water pitchers designed specifically for the purpose of filtering water. The advantage of these water pitchers is their simplicity itself. All you have to do is fill the picture up with tap water and then let it filter out the impurities. The biggest disadvantage to using water pitcher filters is the time that it takes for the water to be filtered. Very often they take 15 minutes or more just to filter a half-gallon of water. So obviously, if you often need water right away this may not be your best solution.

2. The next step up in the water filter chain are faucet mounted water filters. These are often seen advertised on television and in magazines. As the name indicates, they connect to the end of your water faucet, and have a lever so that you can either choose straight tap water, or to send the tap water through your filter instead. These are also very inexpensive types of filters, and very easy to install. They filter water much more quickly than water pitcher filters, but the filter cartridges have to be changed on a regular basis, perhaps every month or so.

3. Undersink water filters have the advantage of providing some of the best overall water filtration possible, and also are stored out of sight. They also work much faster then either water pitcher filters or faucet mounted filters. However, the biggest drawback to them is that in many cases professional installation is a good idea. Some homeowners that are very handy may attempt to tackle the installation of an undersink water filter, but for the average person it may be too much of a job. Cartridges are also used as the filter material for these units, but they only have to be replaced about every six months or so.

4. Whole house water filters are able to provide filtered water to every faucet in your home easily and quickly, which many see as a clear advantage. However, they can be even more involved to install than undersink units, and so most often you will need the services of a plumber to get it set up. The filters in these units also last about six months or so.

5. Reverse osmosis water filters were very popular in the past, but are not nearly as popular today due to the increasing effectiveness of some of the less expensive and easier to install water filtration systems. Perhaps the biggest drawback about reverse osmosis filters is that they waste almost 5 gal. of water for every gallon that they purify. On the plus side though, they are one of the best water filtration systems available, capable of filtering out even some of the smallest and most obscure pollutants.

As you can see, there are several choices to be made when you're considering home water filter systems, and hopefully the information provided above will help you make a more informed choice of the water filtration system that will work best for you.

Book Review - Sacred Grief

The Mystery of the Unknown - A New View on Grief

Leslee Tessmann relates her spiritual journey into self discovery in her book "Sacred Grief". It is her story of moving from unresolved heartache and grief into a new awareness of the comfort and healing that come with acceptance and a conscious commitment to bringing a sacred context into all of her life.

Leslee's story includes incidents that led to her emotional trials and the stress that resulted in anger, guilt, sadness, loneliness, anxiety, sadness, and pain. She tells of her disappointment, self doubt, and uncertainty that left her drained physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

She relates the process of her experience in exploring and exchanging a new dimension of consolation and healing as she worked through the process of bereavement.

Leslee exchanged the conventional approach to this anguish by accepting grief as sacred. She explains: "Relating to grief as sacred is like watching a fabulous epic drama of my life unfold and I'm the star. I become curious and interested in each scene and want to stay with it until the very end. I find myself entertained, energized, and surprisingly content."

Leslee's father moved into the unknown during his final days by celebrating the adventure and mystery of death. Leslee expresses the pain of losing her father as "poignant moments of tenderness." Genuineness, compassion, generosity, and a global view have an impact in this spiritual journey of experiencing the rewards of "sacred grief."

I was intrigued with Leslee's conception of self induced suffering, of the danger of losing the excitement and exploration of life as a child with the acquired judgment and assessment of the adult. She discusses how self pity, apathy and depression lead to exhaustion.

Leslee reiterates the importance of expressing feelings, and of resolving issues from past relationships with a reminder that every moment is sacred. Sacred relationships are based on mutual respect and the freedom to be fully self-expressed.

I appreciated the thought provoking questions provided in the study guide provided for use in individual study or with a support group. I also found the comprehensive bibliography to be helpful.

Leslee moves the reader from turmoil to order and peace as her story unfolds. Her writing is compelling, grounded in reality, profound, insightful, dynamic, and sensitive.

Tips for Traveling To and Around Europe

Europe is one of the most heavily traveled continents for people coming from North America. There are so many famous countries that offer excitement, culture, learning experiences, and an overall enjoyable time. After choosing the country within Europe that you would like to visit, or if you plan to visit multiple countries on your vacation, you should be aware of the following tips.

Getting into Europe is not as easy as it used to be, so you'll want to come prepared. You must have a passport to enter any country. Consequently if you are traveling through several of them, it is wise to have your passport and/or visa ready at all times to show to the various customs offices. You also need to be aware in advance of items and products you can and cannot bring into other countries as you travel from one to another.

There are 320 mixed languages spoken throughout Europe, so try to learn a few key phrases based on the primary languages of your destination nations. The majority of Europeans speak several languages in addition to their mother tongue, so it should suffice to learn just a bit of the major ones. A high percentage of people also speak at least a little English as well, depending to where you travel.

When renting a car, be aware of different national laws. Some such as Ireland, Cyprus, and parts of England require driving on the left hand side of the road, so be cautious if you plan to drive. (If you are uncomfortable with that arrangement and fear making a critical driving error on the wrong side of the road, you might alternatively consider taking a taxi instead of driving yourself.) Seatbelts are required everywhere you travel in Europe and for everyone in the car, so don't be negligent. Additionally, the speed limits change and can be much higher than those in the US; drive safely and move to the far side of the road if you plan to motor at a slower pace.

Finally, you need to know that electrical currents differ in Europe from that the United States. There are special adapters you can purchase before your departure so that you can plug in your hair dryer, iron, and other electrical necessities you may bring on the trip. If you do not have an adapter, ask your hotel concierge to provide one since the power will ruin anything using electricity without using an adapter.

Planning your trip thoroughly is a good idea. If you do this, you will minimize your hassles as you travel throughout these beautiful countries. It will be truly a positive experience you will never forget.

Earning An Online Degree In The Criminal Justice Field

The term "Criminal Justice" is a bit misleading; it does not mean justice for criminals. What it really is a social science that tries to figure out the cause of criminal behavior in order to find a way to control crime and/or stop it completely. In addition, it also looks at how to rehabilitate offenders and various legal processes. It is a multifaceted research which includes legal studies, political science, sociology, psychology, forensic science, public administration, urban studies, and philosophy.

It can be a career filled with excitement, occasional danger, stress, and has the highest level of responsibility asked of the person that chooses it. The criminal justice can be divided into four categories of jobs: police, probation, corrections, and security. If you are thinking about entering this into one of these possibilities, now that the internet is available, you can obtain an online degree at your convenience!

There are some questions that you should ask yourself before you proceed, such as if you have any physical limitations especially if you are aiming for police work. How do you react under pressure? Do you consider yourself to be an honest person with integrity? With situations that are difficult to deal with, could you hold yourself accountable and personally responsible? Do you enjoy helping people and are able to show compassion when a crisis is occurring in an individual's life?

If you did not have any difficulty answering these questions, your future in the criminal justice system should be a successful one! At this point, you should start investigating what form of training and what level of education you would like to get. Although a degree is not mandatory for police officers, those that have opted for a higher education will have better advancement possibilities plus a higher income.

Enrolling into an online degree program can begin with an Associate's degree. This degree can take up to two years to complete; however, depending upon the school you choose, it may have an accelerated program or other alternatives in order to help students return to the workforce quicker. The most important aspect of any institutions that you are researching is whether or not they have their accreditation from a recognized national agency. If they try and tell that it is on its way or some other excuse, walk away!

As a criminal justice major, your courses will include the philosophy of punishment, deterrence of crimes, and the ethical codes of behavior. You will also receive instruction regarding the legal and correction system. Upon your graduation, you will be able to obtain employment in law enforcement, court administration, victim services, and corrections.

Of course, you may be aiming for a career in one of the governmental agencies such as the FBI, DEA, U.S. Marshal or Homeland Security. Each of these agencies has its own requirements in order to be considered for employment. The majority are asking their applicants for either an Associate's degree or a Bachelor's degree.

Unsung Heroes - People Who Make it Happen

We are pretty much aware about the tasks of music bands and the extreme sports athletes at the Vans Warped Tour but have we ever thought about the people who are raison d'être for putting together such a great show?

With over 100 bands performing live each day on the Vans Warped Tour, it takes a colossal task to plan and execute properly, so that things are up and running. Who are the real heroes behind the success of the grand festival.

You will be surprised to know that there are more than 400 people who travel with the tour for the entire duration of the rock festival. These folks toil all times of the day, every day to make it happen. Each day they get up at 6 AM in the morning to set up lighting rigs, stages, sound systems and vendor booths. They meet up well before time to schedule the performances for the day. So, who are these people and what do they do?

1. Bus Drivers: There are more than 17 band buses and 19 productions buses (excluding the extra ones) which run day and night, from one place to another. These buses and trucks cover a distance of approximately 500 miles each night and it requires mettle to drive non-stop with almost no rest.

2. Tour nurse: A typical tour nurse hands out more than 1000 Band-Aids and drains out more than 4 bottles of aspirin in each tour. And of course it has to be; after all they are the only ones accountable for the health of artists, fans, crew and the athletes.

3. Caterer: It is virtually impossible to cook for more than 400 people 5-6 times a day but the tour caterer has done it over and over again. With his very own 18 wheeler mobile kitchen, the caterer is ready to cook almost anything any time of the day.

4. Production engineers: It takes a challenge to organize more than 100 music bands and make them perform their best on 10 different stages on a single tour. Production engineers are the ones responsible for it.

5. Security: To ensure that everyone has fun and yet are safe in the entire tour, Vans Warped Tour employs more than 70 security personnel each day.

6. Merchandise Vendors: Fans often wish to collect a souvenir, a T-shirt or a CD so that they remember the fun they had at the tour. For this purpose, merchandise vendors set up and break down their booths each day of the tour.

7. Road crew: Road crew members are in charge to test and tune musical instruments, setting up and breaking down lighting rigs and arranging things in case of emergencies.

8. First Aid tent Personnel: They are always there to treat minor injuries, bandage cuts and even to rehydrate the drained out folks at the tour.

9. Tour Clean-Up Personnel: Once the show winds up, the tour clean-up personnel begin with their work. They collect garbage in large poly-bags and sometimes, the trash weighs up to four thousand kilograms. The personnel work all through the night so that the next morning when the fans return, they find a clean place to hang around.

Benefits of Building a Solid Concrete House and Garage

When building a home or garage, it is important to weigh the benefits of different types of construction methods to decide what would be best for you. One of the best options is building with concrete.

There are many benefits to building a solid concrete house and garage. The following are some examples of these benefits:

- Strength. Poured concrete forms a barrier to the elements and can be further strengthened by steel reinforcement. If you live in a part of the world where hurricanes or other serious weather conditions are a factor, concrete is less likely to be destroyed. With garages constructed from wood, they are usually destroyed for 2 reasons. The garage door is the weakest part of a garage, and in the event of a tornado or severe storm, it can be easily blown out due to wind speed and air pressure. Once this happens, the garage is likely to be destroyed completely and if the garage is attached to the house, the house may sustain significant damage.

- Beauty. With concrete, you have design flexibility as a house or garage can be built to any size or shape you want. You can also stamp patterns of any type in concrete. Creativity is not hindered by concrete. For example, did you know that the trunk and roots of the Tree of Life at Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World is made from concrete?

- Fire safety. If you have a house fire, solid concrete can slow the spread of the flames giving you and your family time to evacuate to safety. Not only could this could mean the difference between life and death, it could mean the difference between having some repairable fire damage versus the loss of your home and its contents.

- Water damage prevention. Concrete construction has a greater resistance to water damage or leakage of any sort due to its solidity.

- Insect resistant. Insects are less likely to infest solid concrete houses or garages. Far more appealing to them are buildings made of wood, especially in the case of termites.

- Quiet and comfortable. Solid concrete houses are quieter than their wood-frame counterparts as the concrete acts as a barrier to sound. Additionally, the concrete prevents air leakage and slows down heat from escaping therefore a concrete home stays warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. This can help keep utility costs low.

- Environmentally friendly. Concrete is environmentally friendly as the ingredients of concrete (water, aggregate, and cement) are abundant in supply. Additionally, the ingredients take a lesser toll in their extraction than other construction materials. Concrete is also energy efficient, has minimal waste and it lasts a long time.

Concrete is a medium of flexibility and nearly endless possibilities. The phrase 'any size, any shape, any color' can be used to describe concrete construction. These qualities and those listed above are why concrete is used more than any other man-made material in the world from ancient to modern times.

Walking and the Environment

"Today I have grown taller walking with the trees." Karle Wilson Baker

We all know that exercise is good for you. And walking is probably the easiest form to get into.

But did you know that walking plays a part in helping improve your environment?

Walking improves our quality of life because it helps to protect the living environment and natural resources. It can also be built into transportation systems.

Added health and environmental benefits come from the fact that walking is a pollution free activity. It's also a quiet pastime. So we benefit from cleaner air and there's a reduction in traffic noise too.

"Walking is highly efficient in its use of urban space and energy, it rarely causes injury and it gives streets vitality and personal security. Many car trips are quite short, less than 2 km, indicating that walking could be a feasible alternative and contribute to reducing the pollution from a cold-start vehicle travelling only a short distance." C. Mason, Transport and health: en route to a healthier Australia? Medical Journal of Australia 2000

In North America and in Europe, there are active groups who canvass for better walking facilities in the urban communities. They argue that walking opens up communities and adds to the quality of life for all.

In 1996, Dan Burden formed Walkables Communities (http://www.walkable.org) in Florida. Walkable Communities purpose is,

"... helping whole communities, whether they are large cities or small towns, or parts of communities, i.e. neighbourhoods, business districts, parks, school districts, subdivisions, specific roadway corridors, etc., become more walkable and pedestrian friendly."

In the UK, Living Streets (http://www.livingstreets.org.uk) is a similar organisation who state their aim as being,

"... the champions of streets and public spaces for people on foot. We work on practical projects to create safe, vibrant and healthy streets for all. Local streets are a service that we all use. But for decades, traffic priorities have been allowed to overwhelm them, and they have been left dirty and unsafe. Vibrant streets help to revitalise neighbourhoods and reconnect people."

These organisations and their campaigns to free our communities from excess traffic appear to make sense. It is true that motor vehicles create a large amount of the pollution we find in the air.

The pollution created by vehicles can contribute to ill health. Illnesses such as asthma, lung cancer, increased stress and disturbed sleep have been found to be due to increased air pollution.

Walking on the other hand improves health, because every walk reduces air pollution.

So, do you want to take a walk today? Every step you take plays a part in improving your local community.

When Do You Need An Immigration Attorney?

You need an immigration attorney if you want to immigrate to another country or if you are facing immigration issues. If you have a business which you want to move globally, you are at risk of being deported from a foreign country, you need a student or working visa, or you want to apply for asylum, an immigration lawyer can assist you on these situations. Because the laws on immigration can be extremely complex, it is a must that you consult with such a lawyer before you relocate internationally. Immigration lawyers have the skills needed to navigate the immigration bureaucracy.

The lawyer who specializes on immigration can discuss with you, your immigration plans and how it can be made as pleasant and efficient as possible. He/she can assist you in obtaining a residency permit, like a student visa, a work permit, or a temporary residency permit. If your case is pursuing a citizenship, you can discuss it with the immigration lawyer the requirements and the steps that you should take. Other immigration issues that the lawyer can handle include problems on renewing student visa, charges on over-staying a visa, illegal immigrating, and many more cases relating to immigration.

An immigration attorney can also work on asylum and refugee applications. You can hire his/her services and apply for asylum either before or when you have reached the country where you want to seek asylum. For businesses that you want to move to one country or between countries, you can hire an immigration lawyer to handle the necessary work permits and other issues that involve immigration.

Most countries have immigration laws that are very detailed and confusing at times, especially if you are not too familiar with the language of the country where you want to go. Someone should assist you in determining whether you need a visa to enter a certain country, and if so, what type of visa should you apply for. You should also have to know under what conditions you may remain or stay in the country, and how you can become a resident or a citizen. An immigration lawyer can also help you avoid denial of your application.

Choosing the best immigration attorney requires time to research. One best way to locate an immigration lawyer is to ask family, friends and co-workers for a referral. It is very important to get a referral from an individual who actually has used the services of such an attorney. Get information from these people about their experience with the lawyer, and whether they were happy with work done for them by the lawyer. Ask also how the attorney communicates with the client, about his/her professionalism, the working hours, and fees.

You can also get information from a bar association in your area. The association has a list of lawyers handling cases of immigration. You should be able to obtain information like the lawyer's experience and whether or not they got complaints against a particular lawyer.

Make appointments with each immigration lawyer that you have in your list, for a short consultation. Be prepared with questions that you would like to ask and be answered. Focus on your immigration issues. While you are on the attorney's office, try to get as much information as you can, because the visit will likely be a short one. After you are done with all the consultations, you will now be in the best position to decide which of the immigration attorneys is qualified to handle your immigration case.

Black Bear Chasing Kid Style

Black Bear Chase

Peddling as fast as my aching legs could move, I came to an abrupt stop. My shocked eyes followed the big black bear as it veered off the old brush road into the dark forest, just a few feet in front of me.

Camping With My Friends

It was early summer. A couple of friends of mine and myself had just finished a week end camping and fishing trip at one of our favorite lakes in the area, where we lived.

As I can remember it was a very long bike ride, even for three 14 year old boys.

Bear Country

The road we took to get there and back hadn't seen any traffic for a few years. It was a good bet we would run into something back there.

Sure enough I did, my buddies missed out on all the excitement, they had trailed behind and missed out.

Spring Bear Hunt

Since that time I've seen many a black bear in the Ontario Northland of Canada.

With the cancellation of the annual spring black bear hunt, I expect to see many more of these magnificent animals.

Black Bear Population

For the tourists, this is good and bad news, for the Northern Ontario resident, just bad. Ontario has a growing black bear population that is one of the largest in the world.

Bears In Politics

The spring black bear hunt was cancelled in 1999 in a pre-election move. The thought was that the government's decision would reduce the number of orphaned cubs.

The number of orphaned cubs in shelters rose.
